Wet wet wet's wee wee wee venue

By Lesley-Anne Henry

Ulster fans of Scottish crooners Wet Wet Wet were delighted last night when they took to the stage for a surprise gig in Belfast.

The Scottish quartet, who shot to fame in the 1987 with hits like Wishing I Was Lucky, Sweet Little Mystery and Angel Eyes, are used to playing huge stadium venues.

But last night they performed to a small but eager crowd at the Spring and Airbrake venue in the city centre, in an event organised by Downtown Radio/Cool FM.

The popular group are enjoying a renaissance in their rollercoaster career.

The Wets enjoyed smash hit success with Love Is All Around, the theme song to the hit movie Four Weddings And A Funeral, which stayed at the top of the UK charts for an amazing 15 weeks before the group got sick of listening to it and pulled it off the record shops' shelves.

However in 1999 lead singer Marti Pellow quit, and went into rehab to battle a debilitating heroin addiction.

He returned to the public eye in 2001 with his debut solo album, Smile.

The band subsequently performed reunion shows in 2004.

And as Wet Wet Wet Marti Pellow, Tommy Cunningham, Graeme Clark and Neil Mitchell are are expected to return to Belfast to play a more conventional gig at the Odyssey on December 8 as part of the 20th anniversary tour.

Earlier this year Lord Mayor of Belfast Jim Rodgers urged Wet Wet Wet fans not to turn the Odyssey into a mini Ibrox when the boys, avid Rangers fans, play in December.
